WIRELESS ACCESS TO THE INTERNET
COMPUTER SERVICES POLICY

1. INTRODUCTION:

The Berkshire Athenaeum offers free, high-speed (broadband) wireless Internet access to anyone with a PC or MAC notebook or other portable web-enabled device equipped with a wireless network interface card (NIC). Internet is accessible from virtually anywhere in the Library itself or even just outside the building. This free wireless service has been made possible by the generosity of Richmond NetWorx and CompuWorks.

2. WIRELESS DEFINED:

Wireless Internet access, or WiFi, uses radio frequency signals to exchange information between a computer or device and the Internet. Because no wires or cables are required, wireless access frees a computer to be used anywhere in the Library, rather than being limited to the Library’s normal computer areas.

3. WIRELESS ADVANTAGES:

3.1. There is no waiting for an available PC.
3.2. There are no enforced time limits, so users may connect for as long as they like.
3.3. Users may work anywhere in the building where the wireless signal is available.
3.4. Users may download and save files permanently onto their own device.

4. WIRELESS LIMITATIONS:

4.1. Printing is not available to wireless users in the Library
4.2. Signal strength varies within the building
4.3. Because everyone's computer or device is different, users are responsible for configuring your own equipment. Library staff will not configure user laptops or devices, nor will they install NIC cards.
4.4. Users will need compatible headphones to access audio files.
4.5. Even though someone may be using their own equipment, the general rules about computer use in the Athenaeum still apply. Users are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the Athenaeum’s Internet Access Policy. Violation of Athenaeum policy may result in suspension of library use privileges.

5. SYSTEM SAFETY AND SECURITY:

5.1. Since WiFi uses radio signals, it renders personal security even more susceptible. Information may be intercepted by other wireless devices, so users are advised to exercise caution with wireless access to the Internet. Such caution may include, but not be limited to, having updated virus protection. The Athenaeum cannot assure the safety of your data when you use our network.
5.2. It is the responsibility of a wireless device owner or user to provide up-to-date anti-virus protection, and to configure their equipment to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices.
5.3. The Berkshire Athenaeum assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a computer or other device’s configuration, operation or data files resulting from connection to our wireless network or for the damage, theft or loss of any kind to a user’s equipment, software, data files or other personal property brought into or used at the Library’s facilities.

6. SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS:

6.1. The Berkshire Athenaeum uses the WiFi standard. Speed will vary by location and number of simultaneous users.
6.2. The Library's wireless network is open to all patrons. No special encryption settings, user names or passwords are required.
6.3. Users who bring their own laptop or other portable web-enabled device will need to have an installed WiFi card. The Library does not provide wireless cards.
6.4. Those without a personal device to access the WiFi service may inquire at the Reference Desk about borrowing an Athenaeum laptop (see Laptop Computer Policy).
6.5. Most WiFi equipment will be compatible; however, the Library makes no guarantees as to compatibility of user equipment with the library network.
